David Hockney Art
Paintings & PrintsFor over six decades, David Hockney has challenged our perception of the world. Few artists can match the breadth and depth of his artistic journey, spanning painting, drawing, prints, photography, collage, set design, and digital media.
Hockney's artistic journey began with studies at the Bradford School of Art and London's Royal College of Art, where he was in the company of early Pop Art pioneers like R. B. Kitaj and Allen Jones. In 1964, he made a transformative move to California, drawn by the region's unique light, vibrant colours, and captivating landscapes. His iconic swimming pool paintings, including the celebrated "A Bigger Splash" (1967), catapulted him to international acclaim.
Inspired by Cubism and Chinese scroll paintings, Hockney challenged the notion that we perceive the world in singular snapshots. Instead, he proposed that we construct our view from multiple simultaneous perspectives, an idea he elaborated upon in his 2001 book "Secret Knowledge."
Hockney's exploration of landscapes continued to evolve, with grandeur and ambition. After returning to California in 1978, he created monumental works like "Mulholland Drive: The Road to the Studio" (1980) and expansive depictions of the Grand Canyon. In 2005, he ventured back to his native Yorkshire, embracing plein air painting. His visual diary of changing seasons culminated in the 32-canvas masterpiece "The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire" in 2011. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he turned his artistic gaze to the landscapes surrounding his house in Normandy.
His forays into media like video, the iPad, and 3D photographic drawing continue to write new chapters for the future of art. With a restless spirit pushing the boundaries of image-making, he stands as one of the preeminent living artists of his generation.
