Numbered 2 from an edition of 10. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control. In Heavy Weaponry, Banksy combines the familiar silhouette of an elephant with a missile strapped to its back, transforming an apparently straightforward animal image into an unsettling commentary on militarisation. The title operates as a visual pun, linking the elephant’s physical weight with the destructive capacity of its cargo. Humour makes the composition immediately accessible, while the incongruity of the pairing introduces a more troubling consideration of power and its deployment. The elephant’s rounded body contrasts with the rigid, elongated form of the weapon. Its apparently unhurried movement suggests little awareness of the danger it carries, allowing an extraordinary burden to appear almost routine. Through this economical juxtaposition, Banksy creates a tension between the animal’s natural presence and the manufactured instrument of destruction imposed upon it. The image can be read as an anti-war statement in which a living creature becomes a vehicle for human aggression. The elephant carries the weapon without visibly directing its use, inviting questions about agency, obedience and the exploitation of strength. Its apparent passivity makes the scene particularly disquieting: the machinery of violence is presented as something transported unquestioningly through everyday life. Combining visual clarity with interpretative ambiguity, Heavy Weaponry exemplifies Banksy’s use of animals to examine human behaviour. The elephant is simultaneously imposing and vulnerable, powerful in its own right yet subordinated to the object it bears. This unresolved relationship gives the work its satirical force, turning an absurd encounter into a reflection upon the normalisation of organised violence.
