Two Red Chairs and Table is a signed digital print created in 1986, from an edition of 31. Chairs are a theme to which Hockney repeatedly returns to throughout his artistic oeuvre. Hockney masterfully uses chairs as motifs to express an array of complex ideas and emotions, transforming the humble chair into a powerful vessel of expression for the human experience. Furthermore, the chair is used as a storytelling symbol, providing an unsaid and implicit narrative. This print is no different, as Hockney depicts a scene of summer relaxation through a table and chairs. The perspective of the print is skewed, distorting the chairs into shapes that almost humanise them, giving them personality, as legs and arms stick out at a variety of angles. There is a definite painterly and organic sense within the print, emphasising Hockney’s mastery of experimentation within the printing technique during this period.
