Platform 18 by Peter Burke is a carbon drawing that explores themes of ascent, aspiration, and human presence through a complex architectural arrangement of staircases and supporting structures. Characteristic of Burke’s wider practice, the work transforms familiar architectural forms into metaphors for psychological and emotional experience, creating a space that feels both constructed and imagined. The composition is dominated by a multi-level staircase that rises through the picture plane, its various landings and directional shifts creating a sense of continual movement. The structure appears to be supported by scaffold-like linear frameworks that suggest temporary construction rather than permanent architecture. These skeletal supports lend the drawing a precarious quality, reinforcing Burke’s interest in structures that exist in a state of suspension between stability and uncertainty. At the summit of the staircase, a solitary chair emerges as the focal point of the composition. Illuminated by a suspended lamp above, the chair is framed within a triangular area of light that spills across the upper platform. This concentrated beam transforms the otherwise ordinary object into something theatrical and symbolic. The contrast between the surrounding darkness and the illuminated platform heightens the sense of anticipation, as though the space has been prepared for an arrival, a performance, or a moment of contemplation. The chair, a recurring motif within Burke’s work, functions as a stand-in for human presence. Though unoccupied, it evokes ideas of memory, waiting, and reflection. Positioned at the culmination of the staircase, it becomes both destination and reward, suggesting a point of pause reached after a process of ascent. Executed in carbon, the drawing combines delicate linear construction with rich tonal contrasts, allowing scaffold-like structures to coexist with dense passages of shadow. Through this interplay of light, structure, and empty space, Platform 18 reflects Burke’s ongoing exploration of the human condition within constructed environments, where architecture becomes a vehicle for contemplating ambition, vulnerability, and the search for meaning.
