Platform 22 demonstrates Burke’s ability to create richly atmospheric spaces through the interplay of line, shadow, and suggestion. The drawing reflects his ongoing exploration of architecture as a metaphor for human experience, where structures of ascent, occupation, and aspiration become vehicles for contemplating the fragile and improvised nature of existence. The composition is built from an assemblage of depicted chairs, shelves, tables, and other domestic or functional objects, stacked and organised into a layered spatial construction. Rather than existing as individual items, these elements are woven together into a precarious architectural framework that suggests both habitation and improvisation. The arrangement appears simultaneously stable and provisional, as though assembled through necessity rather than design. A ladder rises through the composition, creating a vertical pathway that guides the eye upwards through the structure. At its summit, the ladder meets a flag secured by rope, introducing a note of ceremony, achievement, or declaration. Unlike the static objects surrounding it, the flag appears animated through subtle mark-making. Burke’s line-work suggests movement within the fabric, creating the impression that it is catching the wind and shifting within the space. This sensation of motion is reinforced by the presence of a pronounced shadow, which exaggerates the flag’s physical presence and extends its influence across the composition. The contrast between the rigid geometry of the constructed framework and the implied movement of the flag introduces a dynamic tension within the work. The flag becomes a focal point and culmination of the upward journey, suggesting arrival while simultaneously remaining in flux. As with the chairs that recur throughout Burke’s work, it functions as a symbolic rather than narrative element, inviting multiple interpretations rather than offering a fixed meaning.
