From an edition of 5. Signed with the Banksy tag in black on the reverse. Executed in 2006, Girl with Balloon (metal) presents one of Banksy’s most recognisable motifs on an unconventional support. Spray-painted onto a metal shelf, the image retains a material connection to the everyday urban surfaces associated with his stencil practice. The utilitarian object becomes the setting for a scene of considerable tenderness: a young girl extends her hand towards a departing heart-shaped balloon. Positioned to the left of the composition, the girl reaches into the open space separating her from the balloon. Her monochrome figure contrasts with its vivid red form, concentrating the image’s emotional weight within a single passage of colour. The distance between hand and string holds the action in suspension, leaving uncertain whether the balloon has escaped her grasp or been deliberately released. The metal support gives this familiar image a distinct physical character. Its industrial associations sit alongside the delicacy of the child’s gesture, bringing an intimate subject into contact with an object designed for practical use. The economy of the stencil allows this contrast to remain clear, with the surrounding space directing attention towards the relationship between the two principal forms. The work’s resonance rests upon the ambiguity of that relationship. The balloon may suggest an attachment slipping beyond reach, or the possibility of release and freedom; the girl’s gesture accommodates both readings. Through this unresolved encounter, Girl with Balloon (metal) transforms a fleeting childhood moment into a broader reflection upon hope, separation and the uncertainty of letting go. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control.
