Banksy's 'Crude Oil (Vettriano)' Sells for £4.3 Million Following Jack Vettriano's Death
In a poignant convergence of art and timing, Banksy's painting 'Crude Oil (Vettriano)' sold for £4.3 million at Sotheby's in London, just days after the death of Scottish painter Jack Vettriano. This sale underscores the enduring impact of both artists on the contemporary art scene.
A Tribute to 'The Singing Butler'
Banksy's 'Crude Oil (Vettriano)' is a reimagining of Vettriano's iconic 1992 painting, 'The Singing Butler'. The original depicts a couple dancing on a windswept beach, attended by a butler and maid. Banksy's version introduces two figures in yellow hazmat suits handling an oil drum in the background, adding a commentary on environmental issues.
From Punk Rock to Fine Art
The painting was owned by Mark Hoppus, bassist of the American band Blink-182, who acquired it in 2011. Hoppus and partner Skye, expressed their admiration for Banksy's art, favouring its subversive and intelligent nature. The couple displayed the painting in their homes in London and Los Angeles, where it became a cherished part of their family's life.

The auction at Sotheby's saw 'Crude Oil (Vettriano)' exceed expectations, selling for £4.3 million to a private collector.
