Now in its third series, Grayson Perry’s Art Club lands on the silver screen courtesy of Channel 4. As in the previous series, the premise witnesses Perry incorporating weekly themes for members of the public to submit artwork to. Last year over 17,000 people submitted artwork to the show, which featured the work from amateur and professional alike, Boy George and even Banksy!
The six part show which airs on Friday night at 20:30 pm promises to represent the ever-changing mood of the nation and again shows the warm and affable Perry in his wonderful studio making his own art responding to what has got the nation talking. Through each episode Perry speaks with celebrity guests and high-profile artists who share insights into their processes. Accompanied by his wife broadcaster, psychoanalysis and writer Philppa Perry the pair make for exceptionally engrossing TV which, like the artist, never takes itself too seriously. On season three, the couple said:
"This show was born out of a time where we needed art to help us make sense of the changes in our lives and find meaning from what we were collectively going through.”
The themes for this series, creatively announced using paper signs much like in Bob Dylan’s Subterranean homesick Blues, are: Love, Heroes & Heroines, Normal Life, Inside my head, Holidays and The Future.
With these kinds of shows, where celebrities and the public come together, there often can be a sense of falseness, of the celebrity “picking up a cheque” and not genuinely interested in who they are interacting with. Thankfully, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Perry’s genuine interest, passion and warmth shine through in abundance. Warm, funny and approachable his interest in the art of the public, their own stories and journeys is a delight to behold. In particular, his ability to listen and interview, never imposing and always alert, draws out the threads behind each artwork. With much uncertainty in the world at the moment the aries is a breath of fresh air that reminds us of the importance of community, of interacting and the power of art to unite us.
