The exhibition, masterfully curated to showcase the artistic evolution of both Manet and Degas, beckoned visitors into a world teeming with beauty, emotion, and profound insights. The immersive atmosphere, heightened by the gallery's thoughtful design and lighting, transported me to a bygone era and allowed me to delve deep into the minds of these artistic luminaries.

I cannot deny I have a clear favourite so in reverse order:

Degas, a virtuoso of movement, captivated me with his exquisite scenes frozen in time, his delicate pastel drawings and paintings, and his evocative scenes of Parisian life. Each stroke of his brush seemed to capture the essence of a fleeting moment, revealing his meticulous observation of human form and the dance of light. Hardly any sight of ballerinas, frozen mid-practice, attention was mainly upon portraits and homely scenes which conveyed a sense of intimacy and vulnerability. The subtlety and precision in Degas' works left me marveling at his unparalleled ability to capture the transient beauty of everyday life.

Now onto the star of the show for me:  Manet -  the visionary realist, showcased his audacious spirit through his revolutionary approach to painting. His bold brushstrokes, unabashedly rejecting traditional techniques, breathed life into his subjects and shattered artistic conventions. Manet's iconic works, such as "Olympia" and "The Luncheon on the Grass," caused uproar in their time, challenging societal norms and provoking intellectual discourse. As I stood before many groundbreaking masterpieces, I felt the electric energy that must have permeated the salons of the past, forever altering the course of art history.

The exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay ingeniously juxtaposed the works of these two trailblazers, revealing their interplay and shared influences. I witnessed the profound impact they had on each other's artistic journeys, with Degas' admiration for Manet's ability to capture light and Manet's fascination with Degas' mastery of movement. The display of their works side by side offered a unique insight into their artistic dialogue, enriching the experience and fostering a deeper appreciation for their contributions to the art world.

The accompanying information panels and audio guide provided invaluable context, shedding light on the historical significance and personal narratives behind each masterpiece. The curatorial team's dedication to enhancing the visitor's understanding was evident throughout, making the exhibition accessible to art enthusiasts of all levels of expertise.

Manet/Degas at the Musée d'Orsay is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the convergence of two artistic powerhouses. It transcends the boundaries of time, inviting us to immerse ourselves in a world of artistic brilliance and to contemplate the everlasting impact these two visionaries have had on the art world. Whether you are a seasoned art aficionado or simply curious about the beauty and complexity of human expression, this exhibition is an absolute must-see.

Until 23 July 2023.
