Though its title speaks of “two women”, the tender, close-knit pose can just as easily be read as a man and a woman embracing lovingly under a starry night sky, a reminder of how Chagall’s figures often slip between identities, more symbols of love than fixed portraits of specific people. The mixed media gives the work a beautiful, layered tactility: ink drawing the essential contours with a sure, lyrical line; gouache adding opaque, velvety depth; pastel floating soft, powdery light across the surface. Against the surrounding darkness, the figures seem to glow from within, as if they carry their own inner illumination into the night. The starry sky above is not merely a backdrop but a quiet witness, expanding the intimate embrace into something almost cosmic. Seen this way, the work sits firmly within Chagall’s lifelong preoccupation with love as both earthly and transcendental. In Deux Femme dans la Nuit, now in the collection of Andipa, he distils that vision into a single, nocturnal encounter: two beings held together under the firmament, poised somewhere between reality and reverie, where gender, time and place dissolve and what remains is the simple, enduring act of holding one another close.Provenance
