In the words of the artist’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, “This one started out as a boy, but became a girl who looks like a boy. She is wearing shades because she is a Punk ‘Pistolette’, one of the group of boys and girls who used to hang around with the Sex Pistols. Lot’s of the Pistolette’s were models at Saint Martin’s School of Art, which was a real hang out for punks They were ambi-sexual, they didn’t conform to gender stereotypes. She is swigging a bottle of spirits, which was a really punk attitude. We thought it was sexist to think that only men drank from a bottle of spirits! ‘This is another Pistolette, and again she is ambi-sexual. My head was all over the place when I did these. Smack, Coke, Acid, really good Nepalese Hash. I liked the green, and the rest just came out of me’"Provenance
