In the words of the artist’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, “The Mekong was a character in ‘Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future’, which was a comic strip in ‘The Eagle’ comic in the 60’s. Shane was a comic nut and he began drawing his own comic strips and characters in the back of the car on the long journeys by ferry back and forth between ‘home’ in Ireland and England where his parents had based themselves."
