Excellent conditionView of Hotel Well II by David Hockney is the second part of a three-part print sequence focusing on the interior of Hotel Acatlan, a remote hotel in Mexico that inspired multiple prints in Hockney’s pioneering Moving Focus series. This print continues to explore the signature features of the hotel, such as the blood-red paved floor, a sweeping portico supported by blue wooden pillars, and distant views of leafy green grassland and cacti. In keeping with the Moving Focus series, where Hockney experimented with new print techniques to convey movement, spatiality, and perspective, View of Hotel Well II distorts the viewer’s gaze of this interior space. Utilising a bird’s-eye view of the hotel courtyard, Hockney creates a reverse-style perspective, making the viewer feel as though they are in motion, looking onto a distorted scene. This style relates back to his famous photo collages. Hockney’s experiments with perspective reflect his long-term admiration for Picasso and his use of cubist techniques. Meanwhile, the vibrant colours in View of Hotel Well II imbue the image with a timeless dynamism.
