A1-517 Abode, 2025Steel and Gold Leaf44. x 15. x 33cm
17.3 × 5.9 × 13 in.A1-517 Abode by Peter Burke is a sculpture in steel and gold leaf that explores ideas of home, memory, and identity through the language of architecture. Compact in scale yet rich in association, the work transforms structural forms into a poetic reflection on the spaces we inhabit and the histories they contain. The sculpture combines the solidity of steel with the luminous presence of gold leaf, creating a tension between permanence and fragility. While the steel framework suggests the practical construction of a dwelling, the gold surface elevates the structure beyond mere function, imbuing it with a sense of significance and reverence. This contrast encourages viewers to consider the difference between a house as a physical shelter and the deeper emotional meanings attached to the idea of home. The composition also carries an implied architectural progression, where a staircase-like ascent appears to lead upward toward a house-like structure. However, this destination is not presented as a completed or inhabitable dwelling. Instead, the “house” is reduced to its skeletal framework, an exposed set of bones and structural lines that suggest form without enclosure. It is hollow, both physically and conceptually, evoking the idea of habitation without occupation, and structure without interior life. This sense of in-completion reinforces the work’s exploration of memory and absence, where the idea of home exists as much as a trace or outline as it does as a tangible shelter. The title Abode directs attention to themes of belonging and habitation, while the reference to 1944 introduces a historical dimension. The work evokes memories of domestic spaces shaped by personal experience and collective history, suggesting how places become repositories of stories, aspirations, and lived experience. Rather than depicting a specific building, Burke presents an archetypal form that invites viewers to project their own memories and associations onto the structure. As with much of Burke’s practice, the work balances formal simplicity with layered symbolism. Through its combination of industrial materials and precious surface treatment, A1-517 Abode reflects on the ways architecture can embody both physical reality and emotional resonance, transforming an everyday structure into a contemplative object that speaks of memory, shelter, and the enduring significance of place.
