18.9 x 7.09 x 18.9 in.A3-528 The Other Staircase by Peter Burke is a sculpture in steel and gold leaf that reimagines the familiar form of a staircase as a symbol of alternative journeys, hidden narratives, and unseen routes through life. Drawing upon the rich associations of staircases within art, literature, and personal memory, the work invites reflection on the paths we take, and those we leave unexplored. Constructed from steel and finished in part with gold leaf, the sculpture balances structural clarity with visual transformation. The exposed framework reveals the mechanics of construction, while the gilded surfaces introduce a sense of elevation and theatricality. This interplay between support and surface evokes the distinction between what is visible and what remains concealed, recalling the relationship between backstage and front of house, structure and façade. The title, The Other Staircase, suggests an alternative perspective on a familiar form. Rather than presenting a straightforward route upward or downward, the work encourages consideration of parallel possibilities, overlooked opportunities, and the choices that shape personal experience. Like the symbolic staircases that appear throughout literature, Burke’s structure can be understood as a metaphor for aspiration, transition, uncertainty, or reflection, its direction and meaning remaining deliberately open to interpretation. The application of gold leaf further transforms the staircase from a functional architectural element into an object of contemplation. Its luminous surface draws attention to the staircase as a symbolic stage upon which ideas of progress, memory, and identity are played out. Through the combination of industrial material and precious finish, A3-528 The Other Staircase explores the tension between everyday experience and the significance we attach to the journeys that define our lives.
