UnframedExcecuted in 1995, Negative belongs to an important period in Mark Francis’s career, during which he developed an abstract visual language informed by scientific and microscopic imagery. Across the expansive canvas, a regular grid of black circular forms is suspended against a luminous white ground, transforming structures normally invisible to the human eye into an immersive pictorial field. The repeated forms appear sharply defined at their centres but dissolve into soft vertical trails, creating an optical sensation of vibration and movement. Although the composition is meticulously ordered, subtle variations in shape, density and surface prevent it from appearing wholly mechanical. The physical fluidity of the oil paint consequently disrupts the apparent precision of the grid. During the 1990s, Francis drew inspiration from cells, bacteria, spores and other microscopic structures revealed through scientific imaging. Rather than reproducing specific specimens, he used these sources as the foundation for compositions based upon repetition, magnification and stark tonal contrast. In Negative, the clustered black forms suggest matter observed through a microscope, while their enlargement across the canvas shifts the image between scientific observation and pure abstraction. The title Negative evokes photographic reversal, in which light and dark values are inverted, an association reinforced by the painting’s restrained monochromatic palette. Measuring more than two metres in height and width, the work envelops the viewer’s field of vision and encourages movement between close observation of individual marks and an awareness of the composition as a rhythmic whole. Signed and dated 1995 on the reverse, Negative exemplifies Francis’s exploration of the relationship between order and organic variation, and between the visible world and phenomena revealed through technology.
