In the words of the artist’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, “Shane began to experiment with acid in the 1970’s but really went to town on it in the 80’s, and for a period of time he was consuming over 100 tabs a day and eating a Beach Boys record. During one trip which Victoria and Shane took together in a council flat in Kentish Town, Shane believed that he had entered Victoria’s womb, while Victoria in turn believed that Shane had turned into a parrot. Much of the work that he drew around this time is full of religious and esoteric symbols which appeared during the trips, such as planets and spaceships, aliens, yin/yang symbols, eyes of Horus, eternity symbols, celtic crosses, mandalas, buddhas etc. It was around this time that the very trippy ‘Lady Victoria’ was created, with the large red lips surrounded by spaceships and many, many tabs of acid, and of course a selection of A’s for Acid."
