View on a Wall
The Flags series by Banksy portrays a group of children and teenagers standing atop a burnt-out car, defiantly hoisting the American Flag. Clad in hoodies and streetwear, these youth appear forgotten, discarded, and disenfranchised. Their act of raising the flag seems like a reclaiming of their territory, a statement of standing up and reclaiming the streets, and perhaps the world itself. As viewers, we are left to speculate about the car's backstory—is it from an urban warzone or a glimpse into a dystopian future? "Flag (Silver and Gold)" pays homage to the iconic photo "Raising the Flag" by American photographer Joe Rosenthal, depicting six American soldiers raising the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi during World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima. The use of colour creates a mirrored, ethereal effect reminiscent of the silver screen, adding a cinematic quality to the artwork, enhancing the piece's filmic allure through its unconventional material choice.
