Platform 15 (2024) by Peter Burke is a carbon drawing that explores the relationship between architectural structure, movement, and human presence through a complex arrangement of platforms, staircases, and ladders. Characterised by Burke’s recurring interest in transitional spaces, the work presents an environment that appears simultaneously constructed and provisional, as though suspended between formation and collapse. The composition is built from an interconnected network of platforms linked by staircases and ladders that guide the eye through the drawing. Rather than describing a functional architectural space, these elements create a layered system of ascent and passage, suggesting multiple routes through the structure. The viewer is encouraged to navigate the composition visually, moving between levels and directions in a manner that echoes the physical act of climbing and exploration. At the summit of the structure sits a solitary chair, positioned as both destination and focal point. Framed by a triangular beam of light, the chair is elevated from the surrounding complexity and given a heightened sense of significance. The geometry of the light creates a theatrical effect, transforming the chair into a symbolic presence within the drawing. As elsewhere in Burke’s work, the chair functions as a surrogate for the human figure, an object that suggests occupation while remaining conspicuously empty. The contrast between the intricate network of pathways below and the stillness of the illuminated chair above introduces a tension between movement and arrival. The ascent through platforms, ladders, and staircases appears directed towards this singular point, yet the absence of a figure leaves the narrative unresolved. The chair becomes a place of anticipation, reflection, or memory, inviting viewers to project their own experiences onto the scene. Executed in carbon, the drawing exploits the medium’s capacity for both delicate linear construction and rich tonal depth. Through the interplay of structure, shadow, and light, Platform 15 reflects Burke’s ongoing exploration of architecture as a metaphor for human experience, where journeys, destinations, and acts of dwelling remain open to interpretation.
