Spring | As told through Banksy

Love is in the Air - Various Formats

As fragrant flowers begin to burst open, much to the chagrin of hayfever sufferers, flowers are possibly one of the most commonly thought of representations of Spring. Holding a bouquet of flowers instead of a molotov cocktail, Love is in the Air is one of Banksy’s most famous images and first appeared along the wall that divides Palestine and Israel. Visually, the piece is characteristic of the artist’s street stencil graffiti style and, in typical Banksy aplomb, features a contrasting image that can be interpreted as playful as well as more serious. Central to the image the figure, silhouetted in black and dressed as a militant, wears a baseball cap and bandana to disguise their identity in a pose commonly associated with the throwing of a petrol bomb. However, the “Banksy twist” reverses this notion as the figure throws a bouquet of flowers.

Every Time I Make Love To You I Think Of Someone Else

The season of rebirth is celebrated in less flattening terms with Banksy’s seminal “Every Time I Make Love To You I Think Of Someone Else,” The early works dates back to 2002 and has featured in various Andipa Banksy exhibitions over the last 17 years. The title of the work explores the concept of a loveless relationship where both members are disengaged and don’t want to be there. The exaggerated pink heart in the background of the image suggests a cartoonish, immature couple who are not willing to part despite a potential conflict. The notion of conflict is further suggested with the two armoured vehicles that are reminiscent of the  British Humber armoured car which was used in WWII. In typical Banksy fashion, the artist takes a serious subject and discets it through barbed humour and cutting wit.

Stop Esso

With Spring comes longer days as the clocks change and the cold, dark winter is left behind. With the sun shining we think of spending more time outside enjoying the cool breeze and flower lined parks. Banksy’s Stop Esso, an early unique from 2000, has appeared in various formats including posters and murals. In the work we see a typical group of friends on what we presume to be a beach. Two characters in bathing suits are in the background sat in deckchairs and in the foreground we see a young lady sitting on the sand. However, our expectations that she is applying sun lotion or running oil are subverted by the jerrycan labelled Esso next to her. The work thematically links into Banksy’s exploration of both corporate exploitation and environmentalism as the noxious substance pollutes the idyllic scene. The work can be read as a commentary on how the normalisation of corporate interests have a negative effect on society to such an extent that we do not even notice the damage that they may be causing.
